Alphaeus Philemon Cole, 112

Alphaeus Philemon Cole was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States on July 12, 1876 and died in New York City, United States on November 25, 1988 at the age of 112 years, 136 days. On December 14, 1986, he became the oldest living man in the United States, following the death of Joe Thomas. On January 5, 1987, he became the oldest living person in the world, following the death of Herman Smith-Johannsen. At the time of his death, Cole was the second oldest verified man ever (although an additional pending case, supposedly born in 1854, may have been older). He remains the oldest man ever born in New Jersey.

The son of Timothy Cole, a noted 19th Century engraver, Alphaeus Philemon Cole followed in his father's artistic footsteps. He first studied art in Italy, before moving to Paris where he studied under Jean Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Artsfrom between 1892 and 1901. In the mid-1890s, Cole began to produce a high volume of quality works, primarily focusing on still lifes and portraits. His painting of Dante was displayed at the 1900 Paris Salon, and more artwork was exhibited at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, United States. His preferred media were oil and watercolour.

Cole moved to England and married Margaret Ward Walmsley, a sculptress, in 1903. He then began to expand his resume by producing wood and steel engravings and etchings, but these works never achieved the same renown, both artistically and financially, as his portraits. Cole contributed several works to the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica. In 1911, he moved back to the United States. In 1918, Cole became a member of the Salmagundi Club, the oldest professional art club in America. From 1924 to 1931, he taught portrait and still life classes at Cooper Union. In 1930, Cole was elected to the National Academy of Design. From 1931 to 1941, he was the president of the New York Water Color Club. In the 1940s, Cole worked as a judge of paintings in Max Pochapin's Manhattan Hall of Art, a merchandising art gallery, which was quite a cutting edge position at the time. From 1952 to 1953, he was president of Allied Artists of America. His wife Margaret died in 1961. The following year, Cole married Anita Rio, a singer, and the widow of painter Eugene Higgins. She passed away in 1973.

Cole actively painted and exhibited until the age of 103. He died at the Chelsea Hotel, New York, where he had lived for the previous 35 years. His work is in the permanent collections of London's National Portrait Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and several Universities. His papers are stored at the Smithsonian Institution.

Birdie May Vogt, 112

Birdie May Vogt

Birdie May Vogt was born in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, United States on August 3, 1876 and died in Miami, Florida, United States on July 23, 1989 at the age of 112 years, 354 days. In 1989, the Guinness Book erroneously declared her as the World's Oldest Person. In fact, at the time of her death she was the second oldest person in the United States and the fourth oldest verified person in the world.

Born as Birdie Mae Musser, her father was a captain in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After her brother left home, she was forced to care for her parents until their deaths. During this time she fell in love with Irving Vogt, a neighbour and Quaker Oats executive, whom she married in 1929. They had no children. Vogt and her husband began wintering in Miami soon after they tied the knot. In 1941, shortly after Irving's death, she moved to Miami permanently. In 1963, she moved to the East Ridge Retirement Village in Miami, where she would remain for the final 26 years of her life. Vogt enjoyed playing canasta with fellow residents of her retirement home.

At the age of 107, Vogt said "It never occurred to me I'd live to be this old. I don't know why the Lord leaves me here. My minister says the Lord still has things for me to do." At the time of her death, Vogt was blind and deaf. Dora Richardson, a friend and guardian, said "She was an unusually intelligent woman, she was just so sweet and pleasant, and she had such a beautiful smile. She had a beautiful Christian character. She was quite a chatterbox. She would quote the Bible. Even though she couldn't hear, she would keep me entertained. She was just a lovely lady. I'm so glad I knew her ... (but) she was so tired, so weary at the end."
