April 28, 2015; Lucy Jane Askew was born in Loughton, Essex, England on September 8, 1883 and died in the same town on December 9, 1997 at the age of 114 years, 92 days. At the time of her death, Askew was the oldest person in Europe. She remains one of the top 10 oldest British people ever.
Askew was born to a family of wealthy landowners. After leaving school, she joined the family haulage and transport firm where she kept the books. Askew never married and held a strong Christian faith. At one time she ran a bible class for young ladies. In the 1930s she took in an unmarried lodger who allowed his girlfriend to stay the night. Askew was disgusted and threw him out.
Askew loved to exercise and remained fit throughout her life. She enjoyed walking to church and even at the age of 80 would refuse lifts, saying "No thank you. It's very kind of you, but I am out for my exercise." Her family say she was a God-fearing teetotaller, self reliant, never bored and unafraid of dying.
Askew lived alone until the age of 106, when she moved into a nursing home. At the age of 108, she survived a knee operation and surprised doctors by sailing through a general anaesthetic. Her great nephew, Christopher Birchall, said she was a lady of great resilience. She continued to knit blankets until the age of 112 and remained in good health until shortly before her death. She outlived all five of her siblings, although three of them became centenarians. Askew attributed her longevity to a modest lifestyle.

Edith Freehling was born in Pennsylvania, United States on September 12, 1883 and died in North Carolina, United States on December 29, 1993 at the age of 110 years, 108 days. Five of her six siblings lived to the age of 95 or older. Her daughter said "I don't think she worried very much. Nothing bothered my mother. She was so calm."

Vincenzo Izzillo was born in Campania, Italy on July 29, 1883 and died in Florida, United States on January 23, 1994 at the age of 110 years, 178 days. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living man born in Italy.
Chelidonia Merosi-Lollobrigida, 112
April 28, 2015; Chelidonia Merosi-Lollobrigida was born in Subiaco, Lazio, Italy on October 11, 1883 and died in the same town on December 10, 1996 at the age of 112 years, 60 days. At the time of her death, she had been the oldest living person in Italy for more than two years. She remains the oldest person ever born in Lazio. When asked for the secret to her longevity, she said "Pray every day, be at peace with everyone, be kind, honest and trust to the will of God."

April 29, 2015; Manolita Pina-Torres was born in Barcelona, Spain on February 24, 1883 and died in Montevideo, Uruguay on June 11, 1994 at the age of 111 years, 107 days. She is the only verified supercentenarian from Uruguay.
As a child, Pina-Torres was classically educated by her wealthy parents and played piano to a very high standard. A respected painter in her own right, Pina-Torres married the famous painter Joaquin Torres Garcia in Barcelona on August 20, 1908, and became his "inseparable companion". She travelled throughout Europe with her husband and visited New York. In 1934, they settled in Montevideo. Well known in Uruguay as "Dona Manolita", Pina-Torres founded the art museum, Museo Torres Garcia in Montevideo on July 29, 1953. In 1951, Pina-Torres created a Montevideo based organisation named MAOTIMA, which was dedicated to working on embroidered tapestries.
Pina Torres's art has been described by experts as "creative and beautiful", but she stopped painting after her marriage to ensure she would not become a better painter than her husband, which would have been shameful to their family during her time and in her culture. She was known to help artists who were suffering from political persecution. Pina-Torres later refused to move back to Barcelona because of the crimes against art that were committed there by Franco backed Nationalists, such as destroying frescoes. She created an inventory of her husband's work, which included over 350 pieces of art. After the death of her husband, Pina-Torres decided to ensure his legacy by creating a museum dedicated to his art which was not completed until she reached the age of 106. She was honoured in 2000 by the Cultural Center Foundation, Caixa Terrassa.

April 28, 2015; Annie Scott was born in Dungannon, Ireland (in what is now Northern Ireland) on March 15, 1883 and died in Reay, Scotland on April 21, 1996 at the age of 113 years, 37 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest person ever born in Ireland and the oldest person ever to die in Scotland, although both these records have subsequently been surpassed.
