Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, 115
June 29, 2002; Mr. Jan
Kuiper of Holland and Bart Versieck of Belgium have just sent us these photos of
Hendrikje Van Andel-Schipper, the oldest Dutch woman in The Netherlands. She was born
on June 29, 1890 and has just turned 112 years old. She celebrated her birthday in good health.
Mentally, she's very quick, but physically a bit less so. She still enjoys life but says "The days are
long when no one comes to visit." She just can't do much anymore; her vision is too bad. Better
known as "Aunt Hennie", Van Andel is the second person to reach 112 in The
Netherlands.
June 29, 2005; We are pleased to note that Van Andel celebrated her 115th birthday today
and we believe that the last photo of her with Princess Laurentien of Holland was taken on this
occasion.

August 31, 2005; We are sad to report that Aunt Henny died at a home for the elderly in Hoogeveen, Netherlands on August 30th.
September 9, 2005; Barely four hours after one of the oldest women in the world died at a Dutch nursing home on August 30, 2005, scientists at a nearby university lab had performed an autopsy, discovered that she died of stomach cancer, preserved key body parts, and started a battery of tests that they hope will shed light on why she lived so long. Hendrikje decided some 30 years ago that she would donate her body to science, says Anatomist and Neuroscientist Gert Holstege of the University of Groningen. Although her hearing was poor and her vision almost gone, Hendrikje had remained sharp. She was an ardent soccer fan, and, says Holstege, "She listened to the radio news every hour until she was 113." Holstege hopes to find that Van Andel-Schipper'sbrain does not have the brain lesions often seen in the elderly, even those not suffering from dementia. "That would help dispel the idea that neurodegeneration is inevitable," he says.
But aging researcher Prof. Thomas Kirkwood of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., is skeptical. "One case doesn't tell you very much" beyond the obvious, he says: that Van Andel-Schipper had "an exceptionally good body for a woman her age."
She was born in The Netherlands on June 29, 1890 and passed away on August 30, 2005 at age 115 years, 62 days.

August 24, 2014; Theresa Bernstein-Meyerowitz was born on March 1, 1890 in Krakow, Austria-Hungary (now the capital city of Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland) and passed away on February 13, 2002 being aged 111 years, 349 days. She was a famous artist, painter and writer. Her age was once a mystery (with guesstimates of her birth anywhere from 1886 to 1895) but eventually the evidence was located to show that she was, in fact, born in 1890. The documents for validation can be found online here:
Theresa Bernstein-Meyerowitz migrated to the United States in the early 1890s. She studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, now Moore College of Art & Design. She graduated in 1911 with an award for general achievement and later studied at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1912, she settled in Manhattan. In 1919, she married William Meyerowitz. The couple were married for 62 years. Bernstein was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, New York Society of Women Artists and the North Shore Art Association. Her works were exhibited extensively with the National Academy of Design and the Society of Independent Artists and have gradually made their way into important museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philips Collection, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, among many others. "World's Oldest Living Person Dies at Age 116"
December 12, 2006; Memphis, TN ( AP and CNN) -- Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bolden, recognized as the world's oldest person, died early Monday, the Administrator of the nursing home where she lived said Monday. She was 116.
Bolden was born August 15, 1890, according to The Gerontology Research Group, a Los Angeles-based organization that tracks the ages of the world's oldest people.
Guinness World Records recognized Bolden as the oldest person in August after the death of Maria Ester de Capovilla of ECUADOR who previously was listed as the oldest.
"Bolden had lived at the Mid-South Health and Rehabilitation Center nursing home for several years until her death," said the Center's Administrator, Charlotte Pierce. "She died at about 2 AM EST on Monday," said Pierce.
Bolden suffered a stroke in 2004, and her family said she spoke little after that and slept most of the day.
Family members said she had 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren, and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren.

February 11, 2005; Thomas Breining, our GRG Correspondent in Germany, has just
sent
us these photos of
Maria Mathilde Bonzo-Wrede, who was born on May 29, 1890 in
Völlinghausen
(GERMANY) and died on June 8, 2000 at age 110 years and 10 days in Winterthur,
SWITZERLAND. She moved to SWITZERLAND in 1915 and married Joseph Bonzo on April
27, 1916 in Zürich. In her later years, she lived with her daughter Anuti Corti-Bonzo (who
also provided all the necessary documents to complete this case) in Winterthur until she moved
into a senior-citizen home at age 105. The first picture, at age 102, shows her with her sister
Maria Marx (on the left) on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Maria Marx lived to be 102 years
old.

October 26, 2001; Robert Young reported today that Mrs. Daphne Brann was born
August 4, 1890 in Oldtown, Maryland and died on March 10, 2001 at age 110 years, 218 days in
St. Petersburg, Florida. She was the nation's oldest known Minister at the time of her death; as
shown in the photo, she voted in the November 2000 Presidential Election. The story didn't say
whom she voted for, but she reportedly got a congratulatory letter from Governor Jeb Bush.
Therefore, we image that she must have been a Republican. Sadly, her obituary stated that she
had a heart attack in the hospital, but that the staff was reluctant to resuscitate her, since "it might
do more harm than good." It appears that the "no code" instructions (from the patient or from the
family?) is consistent with the notion that "110 years is old enough;" so its alright to let her die in
peace. However, Young goes on to editorialize, "That was a shame, considering her mind
was still sharp."
August 23, 2018; Stella Chesnut was born in Georgia, United States on February 23, 1890 and died in the same state on March 7, 2001 at the age of 111 years, 12 days.

She is said to walk up the stairs to her second-floor living quarters on her own and can do arithmetic in her head. She was confirmed as having graduated from Drake University in the year 1912.
July 31, 2002; Robert Young of Atlanta has now validated Johnston's documentation. She was born on August 6, 1890 in Indianola, Iowa. The 1900 census for Ringgold County, Iowa lists Emma V. Calhoun, age 9, born August 1890, child of Joseph and Emma P. Calhoun. This accords with the other information, namely the family-tree records, Drake University records, Birth Affidavit, and Passport Application.

At the time of her death, she was the oldest person ever from Portugal, the second oldest living person in Europe, and the fifth oldest living person in the world. Her Portuguese longevity record was broken by Maria de Jesus in 2008.
Maia-Lopes remembered the day when the last king of Portugal, Manuel II, visited the nearby town of Espinho, on November 23, 1908. Maia-Lopes was nearly blind and deaf in her final years, and confined to her bed after an accident in 2002. She had eight daughters and outlived her husband by 63 years. October 4, 2002; Robert Young of Atlanta, GA has sent us this photo of
Aurelia Marotta, of Boston, MA. She was born on June 27, 1890 and is now 113
years old.
October 4, 2003; Norma D. Marotta Walsh, her Granddaughter, just informed us that her
Grandmother, the oldest person in Massachusetts, died this morning at age 113 years, 99 days.
Her Obituary can be found on the Internet as it was published in the Boston Globe newspaper.
We should acknowledge that, contrary to the presumption stated in the article, Aurelia Marotta was only the third oldest and not the second-oldest American at the time of her death. Charlotte Benkner of Ohio was, in fact, the second oldest American at this time. On October 7th, we alerted the Boston office of The Associated Press about this error, and it is hoped that this will prevent a proliferation of this mistake in other newspapers throughout the country.
