Hendrikje Van Andel

June 29, 2002; Mr. Jan Kuiper of Holland and Bart Versieck of Belgium have just sent us these photos of Hendrikje Van Andel-Schipper, the oldest Dutch woman in The Netherlands. She was born on June 29, 1890 and has just turned 112 years old. She celebrated her birthday in good health. Mentally, she's very quick, but physically a bit less so. She still enjoys life but says "The days are long when no one comes to visit." She just can't do much anymore; her vision is too bad. Better known as "Aunt Hennie", Van Andel is the second person to reach 112 in The Netherlands.

June 29, 2005; We are pleased to note that Van Andel celebrated her 115th birthday today and we believe that the last photo of her with Princess Laurentien of Holland was taken on this occasion.

Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, 115

September 9, 2005; Barely four hours after one of the oldest women in the world died at a Dutch nursing home on August 30, 2005, scientists at a nearby university lab had performed an autopsy, discovered that she died of stomach cancer, preserved key body parts, and started a battery of tests that they hope will shed light on why she lived so long. Hendrikje decided some 30 years ago that she would donate her body to science, says Anatomist and Neuroscientist Gert Holstege of the University of Groningen. Although her hearing was poor and her vision almost gone, Hendrikje had remained sharp. She was an ardent soccer fan, and, says Holstege, "She listened to the radio news every hour until she was 113." Holstege hopes to find that Van Andel-Schipper'sbrain does not have the brain lesions often seen in the elderly, even those not suffering from dementia. "That would help dispel the idea that neurodegeneration is inevitable," he says.

But aging researcher Prof. Thomas Kirkwood of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., is skeptical. "One case doesn't tell you very much" beyond the obvious, he says: that Van Andel-Schipper had "an exceptionally good body for a woman her age."

She was born in The Netherlands on June 29, 1890 and passed away on August 30, 2005 at age 115 years, 62 days.

She was a famous artist, painter and writer. Her age was once a mystery (with guesstimates of her birth anywhere from 1886 to 1895) but eventually the evidence was located to show that she was, in fact, born in 1890. The documents for validation can be found online here:

"World's Oldest Living Person Dies at Age 116"

December 12, 2006; Memphis, TN ( AP and CNN) -- Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bolden, recognized as the world's oldest person, died early Monday, the Administrator of the nursing home where she lived said Monday. She was 116.

Bolden was born August 15, 1890, according to The Gerontology Research Group, a Los Angeles-based organization that tracks the ages of the world's oldest people.

Guinness World Records recognized Bolden as the oldest person in August after the death of Maria Ester de Capovilla of ECUADOR who previously was listed as the oldest.

"Bolden had lived at the Mid-South Health and Rehabilitation Center nursing home for several years until her death," said the Center's Administrator, Charlotte Pierce. "She died at about 2 AM EST on Monday," said Pierce.

Bolden suffered a stroke in 2004, and her family said she spoke little after that and slept most of the day.

Family members said she had 40 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren, 150 great-great-grandchildren, 220 great-great-great grandchildren, and 75 great-great-great-great grandchildren.

Daphne Brann, 110

Daphne Brann, age 110
October 26, 2001; Robert Young reported today that Mrs. Daphne Brann was born August 4, 1890 in Oldtown, Maryland and died on March 10, 2001 at age 110 years, 218 days in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was the nation's oldest known Minister at the time of her death; as shown in the photo, she voted in the November 2000 Presidential Election. The story didn't say whom she voted for, but she reportedly got a congratulatory letter from Governor Jeb Bush. Therefore, we image that she must have been a Republican. Sadly, her obituary stated that she had a heart attack in the hospital, but that the staff was reluctant to resuscitate her, since "it might do more harm than good." It appears that the "no code" instructions (from the patient or from the family?) is consistent with the notion that "110 years is old enough;" so its alright to let her die in peace. However, Young goes on to editorialize, "That was a shame, considering her mind was still sharp."

Aurelia Marotta, of Boston, MA. She was born on June 27, 1890 and is now 113 years old.

October 4, 2003; Norma D. Marotta Walsh, her Granddaughter, just informed us that her Grandmother, the oldest person in Massachusetts, died this morning at age 113 years, 99 days. Her Obituary can be found on the Internet as it was published in the Boston Globe newspaper.

We should acknowledge that, contrary to the presumption stated in the article, Aurelia Marotta was only the third oldest and not the second-oldest American at the time of her death. Charlotte Benkner of Ohio was, in fact, the second oldest American at this time. On October 7th, we alerted the Boston office of The Associated Press about this error, and it is hoped that this will prevent a proliferation of this mistake in other newspapers throughout the country.
