June 2, 2009; Our German correspondents have been able to locate sufficient documentation to validate the case of Ella Ille Rentel of Germany, who would have been the world's oldest person in the year 1962. She was born in Lithuania (at the time of the Russian Empire) on May 19, 1852, but died in West Germany on September 19, 1962 at age 110 years, 123 days. This case has been reflected in our latest update to Table C (CCC).

Tuesday, October 6, 2009; We are sad to report that Mary Lindsey, a family member of Mary Gentry, posted on her blog, that she passed away earlier today at the age of 112 years, 32 days.

"Today is a sad day in the life of the Gentrys. Our dear Great Grandmother of 112 years old passed away early this morning of natural causes. Yes, if you are trying to calculate when she was born, it was back in 1897. September 4, 1897 to be exact. She lived a long, healthy life throughout three different centuries. My Great-grandmother, Mary Gentry, was a woman of faith. She consistently reminded those she spoke with that her best friend was Jesus. She taught Sunday school for over 40 years to kindergarten children and loved singing nursery rhymes. In these last few years, she has had less cognitive function, but to everyone's surprise, she could recite nursery rhymes as if her memory was perfect... The photo above was taken several months before her 112th birthday when Chris and I were visiting the family in Aliceville, AL." Click on the photo for more details.

A Westmoreland woman is now believed to be the oldest person in the United States -- and second-oldest in the entire world. Mary Josephine Ray, who lives at Maplewood Nursing Home, turned 114 years old on May 17.

Ray, who was born on Prince Edward Island, CANADA, became the oldest U.S. resident after the death Friday of a 115-year-old California woman who was considered the oldest person in the world. Gertrude Baines' death also means Ray is now the second-oldest person in the world, behind a woman in Japan who is just one week older, according to The Gerontology Research Group, which verifies claims of extreme old age. Ray's Granddaughter, Katherine Ray of Westmoreland, said her "Gram" is nothing short of "amazing." "She's just spry for her age. Even though she's in a wheelchair, she's strong." "She's very smart and sharp still," she said. Ray said she stopped by to tell her Grandmother the news Friday, but she was sleeping and Ray chose not to wake her up. But she said she doesn't expect her to get too excited.
