the oldest living African American. Her Father was said to be a slave. The 1900 Census
indicates that her Mother was born in 1862 and could have been a slave as well. Thus, Ms. Winn
may be the last daughter of slaves in the U.S.

Degueldre's 111th birthday party in Binche.
GRG Belgian International Correspondents Messrs. Peter Vermaelen, Bart Versieck, and
Anthony Croes-Lacroix met with many of Germaine's relatives, including Granddaughter
Marie-Christine, Grandson Jacky, and Great Great Grand Daughter ~2 months old. In all, five
generations were represented. The Mayor of Binche (Devin) was also present with other
representatives from the local town hall. Two Belgian national television networks, one regional
network, and several print journalists attended as well. Germaine is a bit deaf since last year, but
she is still very alert and in good mental shape. She is the sixth Belgian person to reach the
