"Emma Carroll Still Staying Sharp, Active at 111: Iowa's Oldest Woman Going Strong"

by
Mark Newman and Matt Milner, Courier, Staff Writers

January 26, 2007; Ottumwa, IA; -- You might think after 111 years, you could stop doing chores. Emma Carroll thinks differently. "I think work doesn't hurt anybody," she said Thursday. Twice a week, she folds towels for Vista Woods Care Center, where she has been a resident since she was 105. "I like to work and work with my hands. It keeps [them] so I can use them, keeps them limber," she said, flexing her fingers. Carroll also exercises her mind. "I study the Bible. I like that kind of thing," she said about her weekly study group. And because her sight is going but her love of Bingo isn't, she has had to memorize her Bingo card.

That was Vista Woods Activity Director Julie Meldrum's idea. "She's an awesome lady," said Meldrum, who said Carroll is lucid and fun to talk to. She said Carroll has also become a bit of a celebrity. Her Grandson runs an Emma Carroll website, and she's even received out-of-state requests for autographs. "It's happened two times. She got a kick out of that," said Meldrum. That must be the fame that comes with being the oldest person in Iowa, and, according to the Gerontology Research Group's website, the 30th oldest "validated" human being on Earth.

Even so, Meldrum said Carroll still likes to go on group trips from the nursing home. Some of her trips are serene, like going to the Salvation Army for lunch. "I like that, they're friendly," Carroll said.

July 14, 2009; Emma Carroll died on July 10, 2007 at age 112.

May 2, 2010; We are sad to report that Kama Chinen passed away this afternoon in Okinawa. at age 114 years, 357 days, one week short of her 115th birthday. Click for confirmation from Japan. This Japan Today story illustrates how difficult it is to obtain information from this country on the grounds of jealously maintaining the privacy of the family despite the fact that she outlived her nearest relatives and regardless of the fact that this information was released by the government into the public domain in the year 2005 (once the toothpaste is out of the tube it's difficult to put it back). Moreover, this illustrates the futility of attempting to maintain the confidentiality for once publicly available data even in their home country, as the Yomiuri newspaper (the largest in Japan) mentions her death by name in Japanese, quoting the GRG as the source (Sigh!). In any event, they did state that "Chiyono Hasegawa, 113, in Saga Prefecture, has become the new oldest living person in Japan." She is presently listed on Table E as the sixth oldest living person in the world. Finally, it has not escaped our attention that Mr. Walter Breuning, of Great Falls, Montana and the world's oldest living man, has moved up to fifth oldest person in the world. We have not had a man as the oldest person in the world for quite some time. Good luck Mr. Breuning.

Maybelle Montgomery, 110

July 17, 2006; The latest issue of Teachers College's alumni magazine is on its way to more than 70,000 readers, and my story on Maybelle has the center spread, including a double-truck image. For those who don't remember, I went down to Houston a few months ago to interview this remarkable woman. All photos from this assignment are here...

Maybelle Stansfield Montgomery,
110

Most Teachers College alumni remember their first day at TC. The excitement of learning from some of the top names in education, the confusion of finding your way through labyrinthine hallways, the admonition from the Students' Executive Council that "students are to wear hats when they go to Columbia, or to the parks."

OK, the last item may only apply to Maybelle Stansfield Montgomery, likely Teachers College's oldest living graduate. Maybelle is 110, and received a Master's degree from TC in 1921.

To put that in perspective: When Maybelle was born in 1895 in a farmhouse in Southern Texas, Grover Cleveland was President. She was in college when America entered World War I. By the end of World War II, she had already retired. You never tell someone "they don't look a day over 110." But whatever 110 should look like, Maybelle far outshines it. She has a wheelchair to help her move about, but she thinks quickly and has a self-deprecating sense of humor. She still lives in the same home she built with her husband in 1927.

Maybelle Montgomery died on September 22, 2006 at the age of 110 years, 292 days.

"New Hampshire Woman Now Oldest in the U.S."
by Shawne K. Wickham. New Hampshire Sunday News Staff

A Westmoreland woman is now believed to be the oldest person in the United States -- and second-oldest in the entire world. Mary Josephine Ray, who lives at Maplewood Nursing Home, turned 114 years old on May 17.

Ray, who was born on Prince Edward Island, CANADA, became the oldest U.S. resident after the death Friday of a 115-year-old California woman who was considered the oldest person in the world. Gertrude Baines' death also means Ray is now the second-oldest person in the world, behind a woman in Japan who is just one week older, according to The Gerontology Research Group, which verifies claims of extreme old age. Ray's Granddaughter, Katherine Ray of Westmoreland, said her "Gram" is nothing short of "amazing." "She's just spry for her age. Even though she's in a wheelchair, she's strong." "She's very smart and sharp still," she said. Ray said she stopped by to tell her Grandmother the news Friday, but she was sleeping and Ray chose not to wake her up. But she said she doesn't expect her to get too excited.

"Japanese Teetotaller Named World's Oldest Man at Age 111"

June 18, 2007; Tokyo, JAPAN (Reuters) -- An 111-year-old Japanese just named the world's oldest man said he owed his longevity to steering clear of alcohol. "I don't drink alcohol -- that is the biggest reason for my good health," Tomoji Tanabe told reporters on Monday. He also told media he does not smoke and likes a glass of milk a day. Asked how much longer he wanted to live, the besuited Tanabe, a former local government worker, said simply: "I don't want to die."

Tanabe, who lives with his 66-year-old Son and the Son's Wife in Miyakonojo, about 900 Km (560 miles) southwest of Tokyo on the island of Kyushu, met the city's mayor to receive a certificate from The Guinness Book of World Records recognizing him as the oldest man.

But he has some years to go to equal his female compatriot Yone Minagawa, 114, who is listed by Guinness as the world's oldest person and also lives in Kyushu.

However, a former shepherd in Ukraine, Hyrhory Nestor, also claims that title, saying he celebrated his 116th birthday in March. [ Editor's Note: This claim has not been validated. See the Incomplete Cases Section for a photo.]

The Japanese are among the world's longest-lived people, with 28,395 people aged 100 or above in Japan at the end of September last year, according to the Health Ministry. Researchers have attributed the phenomenon to factors including healthy diet and tight-knit communities.

___________

September 18, 2007; The world's oldest man celebrated his birthday today at age 112. Born in the same year as King George VI (who died in 1952), Mr. Tanabe said, "Being a teetotaler and sticking to a daily routine helped me stay young." He received flowers and a gift of ¥100,000 (UK£440 pounds; US$900) from the local Mayor.

"World's Oldest Man Wants To Live Forever"

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 (icWales) - Mr. Tomoji Tanabe, the World's Oldest Man, celebrated his 112th birthday today at his home in South-Western JAPAN with the Mayor presenting him a bouquet and a letter of congratulation. Tanabe, born on September 18, 1895, took the title in January after the death of Emiliano Mercado Del Toro of Puerto Rico, who - at 115 - was then the oldest person.

Earlier this year, Tanabe received a certificate from Guinness World Records certifying him as the World's Oldest Male. Today, asked how many more years he wants to live, Tanabe said " infinitely" according to Yasuo Yamashita, an official of Miyakonojo City in Miyazaki, where Tanabe lives with his Son and Daughter-in-law. "I want to live indefinitely. I don't want to die," he said, as he marked his birthday, Kyodo News Agency reported. A former city land surveyor, Tanabe appears to be in good health and drinks milk. He keeps a daily diary, avoids alcohol, and does not smoke.

In Japan, one of the world's most rapidly aging countries, there were 32,295 centenarians as of September 1st, according to the Health Ministry. The number of people aged 100 and over has almost quadrupled in the past ten years.
