While the 2000's are just beginning, already we see the cohort advancing ahead of the previous parameters. In a population that has increased from 11.1 million in 1959 to 15.9 million today, we see a struggle to reach, and then maintain, a Supercentenarian population. Ten times the 110 mark has been reached, only to fall below with the death of the oldest person. In 1996, for the first time, a 110-year-old was succeeded by another 110-year-old, but she died just 2 months later, and the record fell below 110 again.

Since 1997, however, the record has continuously been above 110, with two back-ups presently. The men's living titleholder record also saw a corresponding rise in the 1990's, with the threshold advancing from 105 in 1990 to 110 today.

I purposely left Belgian-born Jan Machiel Reyskens off the table, as I consider people according to their place of birth (you may live in many nations, but can only be born in one. And that one is where the birth record, if any, should be located).
